SA vs Barbarians Kickoff 17:30 (SA Time) @ Wembley Stadium, England

As the Springboks are departing on their year end tour, their first obstacle will come in the form of a strong Barbarians team; packed with aspiring Springbok players, overlooked by Allister Coetzee — no doubt these players will have a point to prove. While the Barbarians match preparation usually consists of lifting pints for dumbbells at the bar, as always, they will be brutal on match day. The importance of the South Africa vs Barbarians match should not be underestimated, especially, in the context of the South African end of year tour.

The Springboks are in desperate need of a confidence boost after a string of dreadful performances in the Rugby Championship. A loss to the Barbarians means that South Africa will face Eddie Jones and an England team, focused on world rugby domination, with the Boks lacking both confidence and direction. Yet a win might just give the Boks’, a bit of,  a boost for some much-needed confidence, heading in to the vital Twickenham fixture — thus the million dollar question…can South Africa pull off a win against a relatively strong Barbarians team?

This Is Our Full Springboks vs Barbarians Betting Preview & Analysis

The last time South Africa played the Barbarians was back in 2010, a hard fought match which they (South Africa) ultimately lost 20-26. Overall South Africa’s record against the Baabaas does not make for pretty reading. It will come as a surprise for many that South Africa has lost more matches against the Barbarians than they have won, with an overall record of 4 losses out of the 7 matches played between these two teams — case in point? The Barbarians should not be underestimated.

South Africa vs Barbarians Overall Record

South Africa – End of Year Tour Squad Evaluation.

The Tight Five

In the tight five South Africa certainly, have the upper hand with a world-class lock pairing in Pieter-Steph du Toit and rookie RG Snyman. Since announcing his retirement South African captain Adriaan Strauss has greatly improved his game, and although Strauss is being rested for the Barbarians match, Lions hooker Malcolm Marx makes for a more than capable backup.

In the front row, the ever reliable Tendai  “The Beast” Mtawarira paired with either Lourens Adriaanse will ensure the South African scrum provides a good platform for the backline, but will it be enough…?

The Loose Forwards

The loose trio (which used to be a traditional strength of SA rugby) is presenting some serious problems for Allister Coetzee ahead of the Barbarians match. A loose trio consisting of Nizaam Carr, Oupa Mohoje and rookie flanker Roelof Smit (strange selection) will have a tough time competing against some real quality loose forwards in, Brad Shields, Jordan Taufua and the phenomenal Luke Whitelock. The lack of a breakdown specialist / fetcher is especially troublesome for South Africa.

South African Backline vs Barbarian Backline

When you compare the South African backline against that of the Barbarians, it is a relatively tight affair, below you can see the respective backlines of both SA and BaaBaas, where we take a look at which team has the upper hand.

Position South Africa Barbarians Advantage
Scrumhalf Rudy Paige Andy Ellis (c) Barbarians
Flyhalf Patrick Lambie (c) Robert du Preez South Africa
Inside Centre Jamba Ulengo Richard Buckman Barbarians
Outside Centre R. Janse van Rensburg Seta Tamanivalu South Africa
Left Wing Francois Venter Taqele Naiyaravoro Barbarians
Right Wing Sergeal Petersen Matt Faddes Undecided
Fullback Jesse Kriel Melani Nanai South Africa

As can be seen  from the above table, things are relatively even in the backline. Yet the problem for South Africa is that they lack any creativity and flair in the backline, and we will again point our finger to South African backline coach Mzwandile Stick, with Stick’s inability to get any continuity going for the SA backline, despite having had plenty of time.

The SA vs. Barbarians match will ultimately be decided among the forwards, and that is where South Africa’s lack of depth in the Loose Trio department will come back to haunt them! Should the Barbarians be able to get fast, clean ball, which in all likelihood they will with South Africa’s lack of a fetcher, they will be able to play a high risk, yet fast paced and skillful game, which they are renowned for — with a relatively strong backline to assist them.

SA vs Barbarians Preview – Conclusion

For South African supporters it is a bitter pill to swallow but you have to face reality, the current South African rugby setup is in a mess all the way down from administration to player selection. We do not believe South Africa’s tight 5, and possible advantage in the set-pieces, will be enough to give the advantage to the Springboks. The Barbarians loose trio will dominate an incompatible SA loose trio, which will ensure fastball for the Barbarians who will ultimately cut through the South African defensive line.

A 2-day rugby indaba is simply not enough to turn the dire state of South African rugby around, there is simply no game plan or direction, and players are not compatible. Mistakes WILL creep into the South African game — we believe this is a game which the Barbarians will ultimately run away with improving their record to 5 wins against the Springboks

SA vs Barbarians Final Score Prediction

South Africa 15, Barbarians 32 (confidence: 90% – For a Barbarians Win)

What The Bookmakers Are Saying

Currently South Africa is a 7-point favourite, this presents an excellent opportunity for punters to make a winning bet, considering the Springbok team is littered with new faces combined with the fact that the Barbarians will be the home team with literally nothing to lose (all the pressure is on the the Boks) — we feel relatively very comfortable betting AGAINST South Africa for this match.
